Gould’s essay is analytical, but beneath the analysis lies an emotional history. Uniformitarianism was never merely a technical term. It was a badge, a memory, a disciplinary inheritance. It summoned Lyell, deep time, natural explanation, and geology’s emergence as a science. That is why Gould’s proposal to retire the term is more than semantic housekeeping. It asks a scientific community to loosen its grip on one of its ancestral objects.
Scientific doctrines have emotional lives because
scientists are human beings working in communities with histories. A concept
can become beloved not only because it explains, but because it once saved the
field from error, confusion, or ridicule. Uniformitarianism had that kind of
aura. It helped geology separate itself from accounts of “Creative
Interference” and causes “transcending” known laws. It helped establish that
the ancient Earth belonged to natural explanation. It was part of geology’s
coming-of-age story.
Gould understands this. He does not mock the term’s past.
He says methodological uniformitarianism played a “vital role” in the history
of geology. He acknowledges that it helped combat “unscientific notions of
divine intervention.” His final recommendation, that the term “drop from use,”
is framed not as vandalism but as tribute. That tone matters. Gould is
performing conceptual surgery with respect for the patient’s ancestors.
Still, the emotional difficulty remains. A field may know,
intellectually, that an old term is ambiguous, yet continue to use it because
it feels like home. Uniformitarianism evokes a heroic contrast: sober science
against miraculous speculation, patient observation against theatrical
catastrophe, natural law against supernatural exception. To abandon the word
can feel like abandoning the victory it represents.
This is where Gould’s distinction is liberating. He does
not ask geology to abandon natural law. He asks it to stop using one word for
two concepts. He does not ask geologists to forget Lyell. He asks them to stop
letting Lyell’s substantive theory of uniform rates borrow authority from the
methodological principle of invariant law. The emotional inheritance can be
honored, but the conceptual confusion need not be preserved.
The emotional charge also helps explain why debates around
uniformitarianism became so persistent. Gould describes later arguments as
“pseudocontroversy,” produced by the use of one term for two different
concepts. But pseudocontroversies are rarely sustained by language alone. They
survive because the words are attached to values. To defend uniformitarianism
might feel like defending scientific rigor. To attack it might feel like
defending empirical openness. Both sides may be guarding something real, even
while misidentifying the object of dispute.
This happens often in science. Doctrines become associated
with virtues. Gradualism can feel cautious, disciplined, and mature.
Catastrophism can feel bold, imaginative, and responsive to anomaly.
Reductionism can feel rigorous. Holism can feel humane. Quantification can feel
objective. Narrative can feel explanatory. Each term carries not only a method
or claim, but a style of scientific selfhood.
Gould’s article cuts through that emotional packaging.
Substantive uniformitarianism is not automatically virtuous because it is
gradual. Catastrophe is not automatically unscientific because it is dramatic.
Methodological uniformitarianism is not a special geological jewel because it
once fought miracle. Each idea must be placed in the right category and judged
accordingly.
There is a lesson here about scientific maturity. Young
disciplines often need slogans. Slogans gather energy. They recruit allies.
They simplify battle lines. They help communities define themselves against
rivals. But mature disciplines must eventually revisit their slogans. What once
mobilized thought may later restrict it. What once clarified a conflict may
later obscure new questions.
Uniformitarianism followed this path. In its youth, it was
a banner under which geology claimed natural explanation. In later use, it
became a word so broad that it could mean constant rates, invariant laws,
present causes, or scientific method. The banner had become a tent with too
many occupants.
The post should also consider the psychology of letting
go. It is easier to reject an enemy’s concept than to retire one’s own.
Uniformitarianism belonged to geology’s self-image. Gould’s recommendation is
therefore emotionally demanding. He asks for gratitude without dependence. That
is difficult in intellectual life. Communities often confuse respect for
origins with loyalty to inherited vocabulary.
A useful analogy is a family tool passed down through
generations. It may have built the house. It may still be beautiful. But if it
no longer fits the work, insisting on using it can damage the material. The
honorable act is not to throw it away, nor to force it into every repair. It is
to place it where its story can be remembered.
Gould’s final metaphor, the “crossbow in a nuclear age,”
carries exactly this emotional double vision. The crossbow is obsolete, but not
contemptible. It is historically important, even elegant. It belongs in memory,
not in current warfare. Uniformitarianism, likewise, belongs in the history of
geology, not as an active term that continues to confuse theory with method.
The limitation of this argument is that emotional
attachments are not purely irrational. They preserve continuity. They make
science teachable. They connect technical practice to human story. If every old
term were discarded the moment it became imperfect, disciplines might lose
historical depth. Gould’s solution is not amnesia. It is contextualization.
Keep the history. Retire the active confusion.
This is a humane model of scientific progress. It does not
require sneering at predecessors. It does not flatten old doctrines into
errors. It asks what work a concept did, what work it can still do, and what
harm it now causes. It treats scientific language as living equipment, not
sacred relic.
Uniformitarianism’s emotional life is therefore part of
the article’s meaning. Gould is not just resolving a logical problem. He is
teaching a discipline how to grieve a useful word without denying its
accomplishments. That may be one of the harder tasks in science: to say thank
you, and then to put the tool down.
